WHAT WE DO

The core of the CWC's program philosophy is to empower survivors into sharing, observing and expressing their desires for a better life.

PROGRAMS

COUNSELLING

Afrocentric psychology encourages group therapy as well as one on one. The Center therefore encompasses both equally. Psycho social Agents are specifically matched to clients according to their experiences.

To encourage bonding between the psycho social agent and her clients, there are several activities the psycho social agent might enjoy with her clients, for example, time spent exercising at a local gym, shopping and lunch at the mall or cooking at the organization's kitchens.
Touring, movie dates and play dates with the children may also be a part of therapy. Our work just doesn't end at the door.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

The Center for Women of Colour believes in building a brand new woman who will be able to embrace her new country Canada with confidence and helping her understand how her money works for her is essential. Financial classes are available to clients and non clients of the Center for Women of Colour. These classes begin at basic finances such as budgeting and maintaining a good credit record to saving for a mortgage.

ADVOCACY

The Center for Women of Colour will advocate for equal treatment of women of colour in Canada when it comes to jobs and government social services.

TRAINING OF PSYCHO SOCIAL AGENTS.

The Center for Women of Colour trains and recruits its own psycho social agents. For more information please call 905 522 3233

SOCIAL NETWORKING

If you feel lonely and alienated, call us.

THE BUDDY SYSTEM

We will walk with you in your shoes. The Center for Women of Colour has a buddy system. In your time of need, you will be allocated a friend to accompany you to courts, government buildings where you need to sign papers, grocery shopping if you don't have the strength to do it and any places that you are afraid to walk alone. We try to find a friend for you who speaks the same language as you do, failing that, we find you someone who hails from your original country or region. All our buddies have been through what you will be going through. It helps ease the burden to know that you are not alone.

RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS OF ABUSE.

Women first run to a neighbour or a friend to discuss the abuse they are going through before they seek help from organization. At times, the friend or neighbour feels overwhelmed because they don't know what to do or what to say. We will come and talk to you about recognizing the signs of abuse so that you can help a sister. Knowing the signs of abuse will give you strength to help her get counselling, or a safe place to stay. You will be empowered enough to not turn your back on someone in need.
We will gladly come to you or to a group of you, wherever you decide to meet and we can talk about how you can help. If you are interested, fill in the form on the Contact US sheet. We will look forward to seeing you because you care.
